San Alfonso del Mar is the largest swimming pool in the world, more than a thousand meters long and about eight hectares, belongs to several Chilean hotels located in the resort of Algarrobo. It is located right next to the beach, because in this part of the Chilean coast the water is quite cold, and also teeming with sharks. So in order to attract tourists there, biochemist and entrepreneur Fernando Fishman decided to create a huge artificial lagoon with crystal clear ocean water. For this he developed a unique filtration system, which takes water from the Pacific Ocean, purifies it and heats it up to a comfortable 26°C. The pool took 5 years to build and cost $2 billion.
